Position on Racism and Antiracism

Racism is “a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race” (“Racism.” Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism. Accessed 2 Aug. 2023.)

Antiracism is a movement and commitment to challenge racism in all its forms. It is “the practice of identifying, challenging, and changing the values, structures, and behaviors that perpetuate systemic racism and its residual effects” (Harris et al., 2021).

Anti-Blackness is defined as the beliefs, attitudes, actions, practices, and behaviors of individuals and institutions that devalue, minimize, and marginalize the full participation of Black people—visibly (or perceived to be) of African descent” (Comrie, J., Landor, A., Riley, K., & Williamson, J. (2022). Anti-Blackness/Colorism. Teoksessa Moving Towards Antibigotry: Collected Essays from The Center for Antiracist Research’s Antibigotry Convening. 74–81.).
