Pedagogy

Updated 7/25/2024

  • Conference presentations on antiracist pedagogy
As of July 2024, the current effort is developing a pre-conference workshop prior to the SACES annual meeting in Texas this November, sharing antiracist and decolonizing andragogy practices for counselor educators to integrate into their own work.

  • Antiracist training materials
A module-based “course” to offer up antiracist and decolonizing andragogy that we have used in our own courses, syllabi, programs, etc. It is envisioned as a way to share resources along with struggles as the continued politicization of equity practices persist nationwide.

To get involved with antiracist pedagogy projects, please contact Dr. Jennifer Randall Reyes (Randall.j@wvwc.edu). Please contact Colleen Lam Nguyen (nguyecol@oregonstate.edu) for updates on antiracist training materials.

  • Content Analysis of Antiracist Scholarship in Counseling Journals
A content analysis project focusing on the scholarship published in the ACA affiliated and professional counseling focused journals since 1992 (the publication of Sue, Arredondo, & McDavis, 1992). As of July 2024, we are in the final stage of data analysis, with plans to complete the write-up of the results by the end of 2024. As we are nearing the completion of our project, we are not accepting new members at this time.

    • Project Co-leads: Drs. June Hyun, LoriAnn Stretch, & Penny Wang

  • Counselor Educators' Use of Self as Instrument in Antiracist Teaching Inventory - Development
As of July 2024, we are in the data collection phase, yet our collection has been slow. The focus has been explicitly extended by specifying in the IRB that we are also recruiting social work and psychology faculty (both were always welcomed to participate, but now this is more explicit in recruitment and informed consent). Plans underway for additional recruiting in the Fall with conference season. A conceptual article is being planned in the interim.

    • Project Lead: Dr. Jared Lau

  • Counselor Educators' Self-Efficacy in Antiracist Teaching Scale - Development
As of July 2024, we’re in the data analysis and manuscript preparation stage. We hope to submit for publication sometime in the summer, if not early fall.

  • A collective autoethnography exploring the experiences of bilingual (English and Spanish) speaking counselor educators and counselor educators-in-training
As of August 2024, we are actively engaged in the data analysis of our collective autoethnography. Our aim is to submit an article for publication by December 2024.

    • Project Lead: Dr. Ana Reyes

  • Nuestros Encuentros
As of August 2024, we are writing a manuscript based on our meetings and how intentionally centering language and cultural wisdom has been healing for us. We hope to submit this manuscript for publication by the end of September.

  • Scale for Antiracist Interdisciplinary Leadership

    • Project Lead: Dr. Thom Field

  • Antiracist Counseling and Therapy Training Environment Scale
As of July 2024, the scale is in the validation process. We completed the final version of items, sent twice to expert reviewers, and now we are still waiting for more participating. We currently have 53 participants, and we are hoping for more, so the focus is on recruiting.

MENA Project

Updated 8/18/2024
Drs. Elif Balin, Waleed Y Sami, Dana Isawi, and Shadin Atiyeh

NARTIC members Drs. Elif Balin, Waleed Y Sami, Dana Isawi, and Shadin Atiyeh came together to advocate for greater visibility and understanding of the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) identities and experiences in the professional counseling and counselor education fields. This team initiated the project with the term MENA due to the recent recognition of MENA as a new category in the U.S. census data and federal government forms. However, they acknowledge that the term, MENA, as a category is created within a colonial historical context and reflects a Eurocentric bias of the regions of the Middle East, North Africa, Eurasia, and beyond. Thus, besides the MENA, this project is expected to be relevant and useful for individuals who identify with other cultural identity categories such as Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African (AMENA), South Asian and North African (SWANA), biracial, and multiracial, including those people who may be negotiating belonging ambiguity with intersectional identities in their unique historical and political contexts outside the restrictions of the U.S.-based categories.

The MENA project’s primary goal is to increase critical consciousness about the invisibilities and biases regarding MENA identities and experiences. The project will include research, writing, presentations, and interactive webinars for the NARTIC members that provide collective learning and support. The team expects the main outcome of their projects to be a better understanding of anti-oppressive counseling and counselor education practices for MENA communities with intersectional identities and within fluid, cross-cultural, and transnational contexts. More specifically, the project’s learning and community support spaces will have implications for the current crises, which threaten mental health, community building, and effective professional development in our field and beyond, such as the anti-Palestinian/anti-Arab hate, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism, including links to anti-Black racism and anti-Asian hate, through a cross-cultural and decolonial lens.

The team will activate the MENA project in early Fall and share invitations for various opportunities to participate in the project
